How To Correctly Pronounce Utah's Names and Places
Several of the words and place names we Utah'ns say every day might give a newcomer pause as to how they are
correctly pronounced. Here is some help with a few of them.
- Tooele - too-ell'-uh: A city (and county) west of Salt Lake. Most people get this one wrong.
- Escalante - Es-ca-lant': The locals do not pronounce the final e.
- Hogle Zoo - Hoh'-gle zoo: A long o sound.
- Moab - Mo'-ab: Utah's slickrock biking mecca
- Wasatch - Wah'-satch: The mountain range bordering the east side of Salt Lake
- Timpanogos - Timp-uh-no'-gus: A peak (and National Monument) in Utah county
- Oquirrh - Oh'-kirr: The mountain range bordering the west side of Salt Lake
- Sego Lily - Say'-go Lily: Utah's State Flower
- Uintah - you-in'-tuh: A mountain range, National Forest, and county in Utah.
- Abajo Mountains - uh-bah'ho Mountains: A mountain range in Souteastern Utah
- Duchesne - Du'-shane: A county in central Utah
- Hurricane - Her'-kin: A town near Zion National Park.
