Backcountry Skiing Utah

1. The Alpine Loop (Hwy 92) via Provo or American Fork Canyons. The road is not plowed during the winter. nor maintained or groomed, and has no services, but it offers a nice, beautiful in-the-trees experience for a cross country skier.

2. There are three signed and designated cross-country ski trails in the Ashley National Forest, north of Vernal off Hwy 191

3. Bryce Canyon NP

4. Campgrounds near Salt Lake City, such as The Spruces area (about 10 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon), include lots of rolling countryside ideal for XC skiing

5. Commercial X-C Skiing Areas

6. Duck Creek Village, 30 miles east of Cedar City on Hwy 14

7. The Fish Lake and Johnson Reservoir areas east of SR 24, 43 miles south of Richfield

8. Guardsman's Pass, a road going from Brighton to Park City, is a snowmobiling and cross-country skiing area in the winter

9. The Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail, a State Park running from Park City to Echo Reservoir is a 28-mile trail following the old Union Pacific Railway

10. Hobble Creek Canyon Golf Course near Springville

11. Lake Creek to Nobletts Creek east of Heber City

12. Logan Canyon north of Salt Lake

13. Sherwood Hills Resort has 18 km of groomed trails

14. Sink Hollow at the entrance of Beaver Mountain Ski Resort

15. Sunrise Campground on Hwy 89 overlooking Bear Lake near the Logan Canyon summit

16. The Manti-LaSal National Forest, west of Monticello or north of Blanding

17. The Mirror Lake Highway (Hwy 150) east of Kamas

18. Panguitch Lake, 17 miles southwest of Panguitch

19. Pine Valley, 32 miles north of St. George

20. In the Red Canyon/Dutch John area there are four signed cross-country trails

21. Salina Canyon off I-70 southeast of Salina is a favorite for snowmobilers

22. The Skyline Drive, extending for almost 100 miles atop the Manti Mountains on the east side of Sanpete Valley

23. The Stansbury and Oquirrh Mountains east of Salt Lake are a little less known, but offer a wide variety of terrain for cross country or backcountry skiing

24. Strawberry Valley near Strawberry Reservoir (30 miles southeast of Heber via Hwy 40)

25. Uintah Mountains in the North-Central part of the state
